The Roles
Without a doubt, support from all facets of society is necessary for the success of implementing our solution. Below details the roles of important societal members in the execution of our Proposed Solution.
Role of Public
The public will play a large role in getting our idea and plan passed, as a large reason many people suffer so badly and for so long is due to the taboo surrounding mental health in society. If we want to make lasting change, the public needs to be heavily involved and informed about these problems, symptoms, and what to do if they see a child, friend, or colleague exhibiting signs of having a mental health problem. If parents and the public were to get involved, this change would be possible, lasting, and effective. We would be able to start a dialogue about the issue and abolish the stigma surrounding mental health problems. This will help in the long run, as people won’t have to suffer in silence any longer. The most important part is to gain the support of the parents of middle and high-school students. If the parents understand the extent of the problem as well as how dire things could become if left untreated. When the parents get involved and understand the issue, they’ll be able to help their children better if they recognize the signs of a mental health problem. Furthermore, parents will be strong advocates for the change, as the policy will only help their children. If we get the public on our side, then we will have a better chance the public officials hearing our ideas and make the changes we want to see.
Role of Parents & Students
The role of parents and students will be especially vital in enacting our plan. They can be exceptionally helpful in getting the word out about our plan, such as what we are doing to help the community as a whole as well as sharing information on social media networking sites. Parents will serve as indirect beneficiaries as they strongly care about our topic and want to see their children succeed, however they are not the population that we are specifically targeting. Additionally, parents and students serve as supporters of our plan, and they will definitely want to help with any planning, fundraising, or other means of preparation before putting our plan into action. Finally, the students will serve as a great group to gain insight from, as they themselves will be the ones to experience the new curriculum and give us feedback as to what is working well or what we need to work on for future students.
Role of Public Officials
The public officials will also play a large role as they will help implement the program and give funding to it. When the public officials get involved they could help lobby for better funding towards mental health programs and maybe even get conversations about it higher up in state and potentially federal government. The most important public officials will be school officials and the board of education. Most mental health problems begin to show symptoms in teenage years, and most mental health problems develop during this time period as teenagers have high hormone levels, stress and pressure on all sides. To try and get public officials to help push our ideas forward we will go to town meetings and write letters. We would also want advisories to help advise officials and anyone that does not understand the issue and the severity of it. If advisors were present to help we would have better chance at making change as no one would be left in the dark about the issue.
Role of Direct Beneficiaries
People that will benefit most will be the students. The students would serve as direct beneficiaries as they get to experience all of the positive aspects of our solution once it is enacted. When students get their mental health problems addressed a large weight would be lifted off their shoulders as they would know what was going on, why they feel and act the way they do etc, and they would be able to make change and get the help they needs to they can perform to the best of their abilities in all aspects of their life, school, sport or more. Other people that will benefit from it is teachers. Since teachers spend most of their time with students addressing students mental health issues will help the teachers as it helps the students. Their students will be able to perform better and to the best of their ability. This will help teachers as they will not have to deal with as much tension in the classroom and their students will be at better mental performance making them able to teach more and better.
People that will profit would be the organizations that would help inform people about the issues as they would be paid to talk and teach others about mental health and the signs, symptoms and the recovery process.
